What could be nicer than the smell of freshly baked cake? Especially if you’ve baked it yourself! Well, fear not, fellow cake-lovers – home baking really is easy. And the results are delicious! As with anything, you get out what you put in, so it’s best to use decent ingredients if you want scrumptious results. I’m talking butter not margarine and free-range eggs rather than ones from caged hens. Trust me, it really does make a difference to the flavour.

Then all you need to do is choose a recipe to try. If you haven’t baked before, start with an all-in-one sponge as it’s hard to make that go wrong. Turn on the oven before you begin, so that it’s at the right temperature (it’s easy to forget, so do that first). Then follow the recipe EXACTLY – that means weighing out the ingredients accurately, and mixing just as it says. For best results, butter should be soft and eggs at room temperature. And make sure you keep an eye on the time, keep looking through the oven door (don’t open it early unless something’s burning!).

Wait for the cake to cool before you take it out of the tin, or it may crack. Then enjoy – and wait for the compliments… Good luck!
